Mazda Motonari RX

2007

During the height of Mazda’s Nagare Concept form language, Cunningham sought to create a hyper-technological entry for the L.A. Autoshow’s Design Challenge: Robocar 2057, and significantly move the Overton Window of global car design forums, towards more Avant Garde form language systems and imaginative concepts.

The purpose of the A.I. enhanced, biotech envelope is to experientially meld the driver and the vehicle, through the use of multi-channel sensory feedback, made possible via the topological similarity between the human body and the Motonari RX.

The formal creation process utilizes only the ‘M’ from the Mazda logo, endlessly repeated, distended, and combined with itself, through 4 distinct archetypal options of self-interface; Time, Memory, Performance, and Intention.

Structural design considerations were driven by studies of human anatomy and samurai armor, naturally.
